Today I want to spend a few moments considering God’s unconventional methods. I believe our willingness to be unconventional and do things God’s way can open up the way for incredible breakthrough in our lives. God’s methods are unconventional because they are underpinned with the understanding that God is involved, and that as we do our part, at some point He will intervene.
When David was faced with his greatest challenge, the great giant Goliath, the first thing he did was to try on the Kings armor. (1 Samuel 17:38) He was attempting to try conventional methods of protection and warfare. As he tried on the armor, he came to realize that He was different to everyone else. He did things using God’s unconventional methods. He had killed the lion and the bear with a sling and a stone. He was not going to be held back by heavy, cumbersome armor. He was going to use those same unconventional God inspired methods he had use in the past to kill this giant.
David was different to all the other soldiers in this great story detailed in 1 Samuel 17. He was a lowly shepherd boy who had been anointed by God and that anointing was at work in his life. He was a type of Christ the good Shepherd who watches over and protects the welfare of His precious people from the enemy. All a good shepherd needs is a sling and a stone and a heart to protect and defend the flock. He didn’t need the tools of a professional soldier, he used the tools of a lowly shepherd boy.
David was a worshipper. He was a man after God’s own heart. He had a courage that no one else in the Kings army had because He had spent time with Almighty God. Let me tell you when you bow before God, you will not have to bow before the enemy. The Bible tells us when the time came, that David ran towards Goliath. Everyone else was running from the enemy, but that young man was running towards the enemy!
David had experienced victory in the past with God’s help and he was building on His past experience with God to help him in this great challenge. David had a decision to make – was he going to do things man’s way, the conventional way? Or was he going to do things God’s way, the unconventional way. There are times God asks us to do things, and they make absolutely no sense.
When David ran towards Goliath, the Philistines were laughing, Goliath was laughing. They were laughing at this Shepherd boy, they were laughing at God. This was the beginning of their downfall. No one should ever underestimate what God can do through someone anointed by God, someone who is obedient to God and who refuses conventional methods in order to do things God’s way.
When David’s stone went flying through the air from his sling, I have to believe it was directed and propelled by God Almighty Himself. It hit the giant with such force it killed him with one blow. Today I want to encourage you to be willing to do things God’s way. It may not seem conventional, others may even laugh at you, but you be encouraged today, as you continue to follow and obey God, and do things His way, He will come through. He always has the last laugh, He always has the last say.
