It’s Mother’s Day today in many parts of the world and I wanted to spend a few moments talking about a true mother’s heart. To illustrate this, I want to consider the story of Solomon and the two mothers, recorded in 1 Kings 3. These two mothers had come to the King for judgment concerning their unusual situation. There were two babies, one of their babies had died and they both claimed to be the mother of the living one.

To paraphrase what happened, King Solomon said, “Cut the baby in half!” The false mother said, ‘Go right ahead!” and the true Mother said, “No, give her the child, don’t kill him.” At that point this King knew who the true mother was. What incredible wisdom King Solomon had. He knew that if he threatened to kill the child, the real mother would respond in a way that would reveal her love for the baby.

And of course that’s exactly what happened! The true mother’s heart was to see her child survive and prosper; and that desire was more important to her than even her own need to have the joy of raising her child herself. When we truly love something or someone, our true heart is reflected when there are debates raging over the future of it’s existence. The true mother was willing to pay any price to ensure her child lived.

All of humanity is a picture of this baby. The enemy has been at work to destroy humanity. The enemy has made a claim on humanity, and yet Jesus came to redeem and restore humanity. The enemy has said of humanity, “Let them die!” but Jesus has said “No, I will do whatever it takes to ensure they live!”

This is God revealing His true heart for us. Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but that through Him the world would be saved. (John 3:17) Jesus fought for you and me. He could have said just leave humanity to the enemy, but no, He came and paid the ransom for our souls. He is so concerned for us, just like that true mother was. A true mother will put her child’s interests ahead of her own needs and desires. It is an unselfish love.

This is also true regarding the God-given dreams we have. God’s heart is like the true mothers heart and the enemy is like the false mother. God may have placed a dream on the inside of your heart and the enemy is out to destroy your dream and the enemy would love nothing more than to see it die. Ministries and dreams that are birthed in God will be contended over.

Many times the battles over our lives and destinies are fierce and overwhelming, but today I want to encourage you afresh with the truth, that God’s heart is to prosper you, to give you a hope and a future! (Jeremiah 29:11) He wants the very best for your life, so much so that He laid down his own life! The enemy doesn’t care about you or me; he is at work to abort dreams, to entice people away from God’s plans and purposes, but God has a true heart of love for every one of us.

There are those whose dreams have died. Many times, due to their own failures and disappointments, they will try to tear your dreams down. They will try to claim your success’s as their own. We have to remind ourselves at these times to love these people, understand where they are coming from and do our best to work with them and believe with them to see their dreams resurrected.

Finally, on this Mothers Day, I want to say that a mother’s heart is a very special thing. It reflects God’s heart of love for humanity! For all of the mothers who support this ministry, your love for your children and love for others is one of the most wonderful and precious gifts to this world. I want to wish you a very Happy Mothers Day!
