Today I want to spend some time considering the issue of confidence. Confidence in general terms means “the quality of being certain of your abilities or of having trust in people, plans, or the future.” (Cambridge English Dictionary) When we think of someone who is self confident we think of someone who is self assured, who is secure in themselves and their abilities. I believe God wants us to be people who are confident, not arrogant. He wants our confidence to be centered in Him alone.
The Scripture has alot to say about confidence. Philippines 1:6 states, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Hebrew 11:1 states, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”
Confidence in Biblical terms has to do with being confident in God’s faithfulness, His character and nature. Now we live in a world where our confidence can be crushed. We go through things in life that can leave our confidence in tatters. Our confidence needs to be rebuilt sometimes. We can misplace our confidence and place it in ourselves or other things. We can be sure of one thing, however, if our confidence is in Jesus, it is never misplaced!
Hebrews 10:35-36 states, “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” There are times when we feel like throwing away our confidence, but we need to keep pressing through. God will come through as we place our confidence in Him.
Today I want to encourage you, you can be confident in God. God is at work in your life. God will bring to pass the things He has promised. God will make a way where it seems there is no way. Even if there is nothing in your natural circumstances that give you hope or build your confidence, you can be confident in God’s faithfulness and love for you!
